The UNDRR Committee starts off strong with strategic planning on Day One

Written by Matilda Alexis Camara, Journalist, LIMUN 2026

After less than a day, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Committee makes a promising start to reach a satisfactory resolution for all. The intermediate committee wasted no time discussing their approach to solve their two pivotal agendas: Bridging the gap between loss, damage response and disaster risk, as well as strengthening local governance, and community-based resilience in disaster preparedness.

Behind the scenes

The delegate of Pakistan rallied their other delegates during an unmoderated caucus (championed by him) to split into two separate groups. One group is focusing on the financial, social and operational aspects of the agendas whilst the second group is focusing on the technical operations innovations. All the delegates mutually agreed this was the most effective strategy to keep conversations flowing and to ensure every country has a voice in the making of their resolutions. This is particularly important as it is essential for the UNDRR Committee to come to a united conclusion in order to move away from the universal attitude that prioritises remedy over prevention in cases of disaster. The lives of many different individuals across the globe that could face a disaster can be protected if the delegates continue their diligent collaboration to ensure every country's unique situation is heard and considered in their final resolution.

A bright future ahead

The efficiency and cooperation of every delegate within this committee sets a hopeful precedent for the following days to come. In particular, it is positive to see the delegate of Pakistan emerging as a vocal leader within the committee and the delegate of Japan as a potential underdog of this committee as they also assert leadership qualities in discussions. It will be interesting to observe which other delegates within this committee will come out of their shell this weekend and help guide everyone to an efficient and satisfactory resolution. This intermediate committee has come to LIMUN with one goal only and they have already laid down strong foundations to continue building on. We look forward to seeing how their discussions unfold throughout this exciting LIMUN conference.
