The 2026 Opening Ceremony

We begin where it all began. Join us at Central Hall Westminster, the historic home of the very first United Nations General Assembly, 80 years ago.

For the first time, open to the public.

Delegates and Faculty Advisors already have access to the Ceremonies and do not need to purchase a ticket

Through this panel, we aim to explore whether, and how, the UN can remain fit for purpose in an era of geopolitical tension, contested multilateralism and mounting global crises. From renewed great‑power rivalry and protracted conflicts to climate breakdown and democratic backsliding, today’s world looks very different from the one in which the UN was founded in this very hall.

Our panellists will reflect on what the UN has achieved, where it is falling short, and what kinds of reform, political will and leadership are now needed for the Organisation to stay relevant. The discussion will also highlight the role of young people in shaping the UN’s future – from engaging with policy processes to driving accountability on the Sustainable Development Goals and whatever comes after 2030 – and offer concrete ideas for how students can help define the next chapter of the UN.
