In Economic Committees, Delegates Propose Reforms to the Global Economic System

ECOSOC: Education and Cybersecurity as Pillars for Digital Infrastructure and Economic Growth
As delegates in ECOSOC deliberate on building digital infrastructure for sustained economic development, a strong consensus emerges on the importance of two key aspects: education and cybersecurity. With digital technologies and services proving to be critical enablers of sustainable development and inclusive growth, ECOSOC nations are tasked with formulating strategies that integrate digital advancements into economic progress.
As working papers take shape, developing nations emphasize the need for funding from wealthier countries to facilitate digital infrastructure projects that would bolster their economies. Delegates from Nepal and the Philippines strongly advocate for education in digital implementation, recognizing it as a vital step in bridging the technological divide. Meanwhile, countries like Pakistan focus on addressing cybersecurity concerns, ensuring that digital expansion is not accompanied by vulnerabilities.
A particularly innovative proposal comes from the delegation of Laos, which suggests that developed nations invest in emerging economies to build digital infrastructure. In return, developing countries would provide market access, enabling larger economies to engage more deeply within their markets. This mutually beneficial arrangement is framed as a means to enhance local economic growth while creating employment opportunities in developed nations. The Laotian delegate personally underscores the transformative power of digital infrastructure, citing the accelerated efficiency of online banking systems as a prime example.
While artificial intelligence (AI) has surfaced as a potential tool for economic development, legitimate concerns regarding security have been raised. Some nations advocate for implementing policies and regulations to ensure AI and other digital tools are developed responsibly, with consumer protection at the forefront. Interestingly, one bloc within the committee insists that solutions should be led solely by developing nations, independent of external influence. However, as some delegates point out, true economic development thrives on global cooperation rather than isolation. The delegate of Tanzania, for instance, is spearheading discussions on strategies to prevent cybercrimes, aligning their personal perspectives with the interests of the nation they represent.
ECOFIN: Ukraine Tackles Supply Chain Disruptions, and the US Seeks to Downplay Its Isolationist Stance
In ECOFIN, Ukraine has aligned with France, Italy, Japan, Oman, Czechia, and South Africa to address supply chain disruptions, an issue closely tied to the ongoing war with Russia. When asked how Ukraine plans to mitigate global supply chain risks, the delegate emphasized the country’s strategic intent to maintain strong ties with key trade partners, including South Africa and China, to ensure stability in food supply and prevent crises.
This bloc is also pushing for increased transparency in supply chain management, particularly through the use of blockchain technology, as well as diversifying trade routes and reinforcing their security. Meanwhile, the delegate of the United States has chosen to distance themselves from the real-world isolationist policies of the new Trump administration. Instead, they are leveraging the U.S.'s historical role as a leader in global trade, referencing its post-Cold War efforts to unify debt-free markets and its pivotal role in establishing the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995. This strategic pivot is a clever maneuver, allowing the delegate to maintain influence in the conference despite real-world politics moving in an opposite direction.
Meanwhile, in Crisis…
In a surprising turn of events, Greta Thunberg has been accused of being a Martian spy. As she passionately defends herself, some delegates shift their focus toward Queen Charlotte, suspecting her of engaging in suspicious activities with another crisis cabinet. While this scenario may seem far-fetched, it cleverly ties into real-world discussions on interplanetary projects—particularly those spearheaded by figures like Elon Musk and SpaceX’s Mars initiatives. Delegates in the crisis cabinet on Earth remain skeptical, preparing potential military responses while keeping a close eye on alleged extraterrestrial infiltrations.
This engaging crisis simulation allows delegates to explore unconventional yet thought-provoking scenarios—such as the potential for extraterrestrial colonization as a tool for countering climate change. As a bonus, they also gain valuable insights into how to detect Martian spies, an essential skill for any future space diplomat.
Passion and Preparation Define LIMUN 2025
Across all committees, delegates have demonstrated impressive preparation and a genuine passion for their topics. Their ability to bring insightful perspectives, innovative solutions, and in-depth knowledge into committee discussions highlights the significance of Model United Nations conferences, not only as simulations of diplomacy but as forums for forward-thinking global leadership.
